Why Microsoft showed up at Associate in Nursing Apple event

A couple of techies sharing a stage doesn’t appear to be a significant event. however it had been on Wed once Apple invited a Microsoft govt to look at the splashy unveiling of its latest iPhones and iPads.

As Fortune’s Adam Lashinsky place it, “Hell has frozen over.”

The two technology titans have long been at every other’s throats. however they overlooked their variations for a public event at a point of entry area to pitch their merchandise — and, of course, build some cash.

After talking concerning the company’s new iPad, Phil author, Apple’s chief vender, delineate however new apps created for the device will facilitate with geographical point productivity. it had been then that author same he would love to bring out many developers to the stage to point out what are often done.

And out came Microsoft.

“Yeah, these guys understand productivity,” author enthused to a crowd that appeared afraid to ascertain a Microsoft govt striding across the stage. once many deep breaths, the audience applauded the doorway of church building Koenigsbauer, company vp for Microsoft’s workplace division.

Without noting something uncommon concerning his look on stage except to mention, “It’s a thrill to be here nowadays,” Koenigsbauer quickly started showing off the most recent version of Microsoft workplace for the new iPad professional. it had been like simply another presentation, except it wasn’t.

Apple usually keeps its events restricted to Apple executives — United Nations agency invariably brag concerning all the new devices — and friendly startups that show however their apps work simply nice with Apple’s merchandise. It’s one huge industrial.

It was solely many years agone once Apple chief executive officer Tim Cook reportedly same concerning Microsoft’s Surface pill, “Our competition is confused. They’re turning tablets into PCs and PCs into tablets.”

So what happened?

In example of the new philosophy, Apple AAPL -1.92% last week same it had partnered with networking big Cisco CSCO -1.37% to sell iPhones and iPads to companies. And last summer, it joined forces with IBM to create business apps for iOS devices.

By tantalising a Microsoft MSFT -1.87% worker to demonstrate the popular workplace software system on a replacement iPad, Apple hoped to convert company patrons that its gear is business-friendly. Having a Microsoft worker doing the presentation created it that rather more convincing.

It ought to be noted that this wasn’t the primary time a Microsoft govt greeted attendees at Associate in Nursing Apple conference. In 1997, then-Microsoft chief executive officer computer scientist was beamed in via satellite throughout Associate in Nursing Apple conference to speak concerning Microsoft and Apple merchandise operating with each other. At the time, Apple was near bankruptcy and Microsoft gave the corporate a much-needed $150 million investment that unbroken Apple on its feet. once Jobs 1st started talking concerning Apple and Microsoft operating along throughout that event, the group grumbled and booed. distinction that with the crowd’s reaction at Apple’s latest conference and you'll see however the days have modified.

Meanwhile, below chief executive officer Satya Nadella, Microsoft has been functioning on dynamic its image as a closed off school business to at least one that desires to friend up with others. His goal, once a year and a [*fr1] on the task, is to create positive Microsoft’s merchandise square measure compatible with those of alternative corporations, although those corporations square measure rivals.

On Tuesday, Microsoft declared a partnership with each dingle and Hewlett-Packard HPQ -1.20% to sell its Surface professional tablets. dingle and power unit, of course, have their own lines of tablets to sell.

As a part of the new make-nice strategy below Nadella, Microsoft executives have conjointly been busy showing at conferences control by alternative technology corporations. The message? Microsoft may be a additional cooperative player than below former chief executive officer Steve Ballmer, United Nations agency relished offensive rivals and criticizing their ways. Nevermind that those attacks typically came back to haunt him.

For example, Nadella is scheduled as a keynote speaker at Salesforce’s forthcoming annual conference later this month. many weeks agone, another Microsoft govt showed up at information center software system big VMware’s annual conference—a 1st time a Microsoft worker appeared on stage at a VMware event. Microsoft even shared the stage this summer at a conference placed on by a fast-rising cloud startup known as labourer.

The rate Microsoft goes with its 2015 school conference tour, it'll be additional shocking if it doesn’t build a stop at any company’s event.

And whereas Microsoft and Apple might have had their past variations, there’s one factor they each ought to be ready to agree on: pill sales are declining. perhaps the 2 along (along with Cisco, HP, and Dell) can facilitate beat up some attention.
